‘The Phrase That Launched A Thousand Eating Disorders’

 

 

Kate Moss once said “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”… so did an acquaintance of mine who works at Gucci when he noticed my now visible weight loss of 50 pounds. “How did you do it?”  he asked while sniffing an imaginary line of cocaine. Strangely, I wasn’t offended; although it took me two years to actually lose the 40 pounds I gained at university (and an additional ten) people didn’t really notice the difference until I had lost over twenty pounds. It took me a full year and those twenty pounds to realize “Hey! Diet AND exercise“… they work so well TOGETHER! Presently, I enjoy sticking to South Beach Diet‘s heart healthy guidelines… with the occasional splurge of course.

 

I also feel that it’s time for powerful media to stop embracing stick figures like Kate Moss as something sexy and aspirational. There’s really nothing sexy about a walking skeleton with a powder white mustache… Which brings me back to the UK Skins…. I know, I have an insatiable lust for this show and it really should calm down. In the series 1 finale of Skins, the mentally unstable and anorexic Cassie convinces one of her rehab clinic mates to leave the grounds with her for the evening. Her friend replies “What if we get hungry? There’s food out there!”  I’m here to tell you to eat! Eat in moderation, Eat healthy, and eat smart. As always, too much of a good thing can be bad, or in some cases, deadly. Also… if you’re actively promoting healthy habits in your life, don’t be afraid of the occasional, or even weekly splurge. At the moment I am eating a double glazed old-fashioned style donut… and boy is it delicious!

  1. awesome post, Im learning now that diet and exercise are the answer (tea helps too) and if you do it right it can be quite easy. :)

  2. While I mostly agree with your post I do not agree with the last phrase ” if you’re actively promoting healthy habits in your life, don’t be afraid of the occasional, or even weekly splurge.”

    I have been actively engaged in healthy habits in my life for over 4 years. I have lost over 200 pounds and I am keeping them off. Lifestyle change that included a complete change in the way I eat and what I eat and physical activity are how I can maintain a healthier weight today but I do have to fear the occasional splurge. Each ‘occasional’ has caused me a return to the obsession of food addiction and the resulting pain and weight gains were not worth it. I am better off never having the doughnut then I am in trying to eat just one.

    This is me and my experience. I do not believe that every former obese person must be a food addict. I only know how I react to foods. For today I am free of the obsession and keeping off the weight by not eating processed sugars, processed grains or any milk fat. Everything else, in moderation, I can enjoy.

    • Hi Jane, I completely understand with your disagreement, and if one pastry is going to make anyone gain back over 200 lbs, then by all means, stay away from it- there are great alternatives such as yogurt that anyone can indulge in without feeling guilty. What I was trying to get at in this post, is that a general fear of food can also lead to unhealthy habits… and as I said with the Kate Moss and Skins references… there is an unrealistic obsession that magazines and models stir in today’s youth. I suggest maybe you watch the show, not the whole series, but the episodes “Cassie” and the series 1 finale to grasp what I’m actually aiming at. It’s unfortunate that the struggle to be perfect is often dangerous and deadly for some who think that too much celery can cause obesity. Yes, those people are out there, and yes I do know a few. I will say however, that I know exactly what it’s like to obsessively count calories for weeks only to ruin it with the same string of bad habits that made me overweight in the first place. I now feel comfortable when I’m at a restaurant with friends, or when the option for fries, fried chicken and endless pints of beer are placed in front of me, but because I live a healthy lifestyle, I don’t punish myself over such a thing as a glazed donut, because it doesn’t rule my life… but again, that’s just me.

  3. I appreciate your response. Some people can eat a doughnut and some can eat French fries. Some people can have both and some cannot have either. I think the trouble is when they try to make all of us fit into a one-diet-fits-all-world.

    I absolutely agree with everything you said about unrealistic expectations and the deadly struggle for perfection and I will look into watching those episodes. Thank you for your suggestion.

I enjoyed reading your posts :-) Keep loving the new you! Again, I’m not saying watch the whole series of… some find it offensive. I just found Cassie’s character to be profound and tragic as she reminds me of a very talented girl I know. Have a beautiful day evening!
